Villefranche-de-Conflent is an eleventh century medieval town later fortified by Vauban in the seventeenth century. It is on the N116 to Andorra and lies at the foot of Mt Canigou in the heart of the Pyrenees Orientales. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful villages in France. Villefranche is one of the 14 sites constructed by the military architect Vauban, and is considered a UNESCO World listing. Inside the fortifications, its narrow cobble-stone lane ways are home to many local crafts merchants and picturesque cafes and shops.
