CREATING WORLDS

PHOTOSHOP COMPOSITING - creating worlds

Here is where we can infuse personality or thoughts into our imagery with post-production techniques, where we can create imagery from the past, present, future or even an alternate reality. These are all made from multiple photographic elements and lighting effects.

Image 1 ‘Night Crawler’ was not taken at night, there were no lights and no stars, nor was there a large insect crawling up the wall of the building at left. So this is a ‘manufactured’ image based on what the original scene conveyed to me. The whole setting had an Edward Hopper ‘Nighthawks’ feel to it, so that was the inspiration.
Sometimes you capture a scene not knowing why, and you start playing around with it. Later when it’s complete you think ‘ah so that’s why, yes it fits now’. The trick with using multiple layers is to find ones that have a similar lighting, then adjust the colour grading so all the layers have a similar feel.
As you can imagine no’s 13 - 16 were in the days long before I adopted Photoshop.

I will break one of these scenarios down as a tutorial soon!
