CAMERAS

CAMERAS - the different types

This page is a quick look at the different camera types and their evolution, and as such is by no means the complete story of the camera. There are thousands of on-line pages packed with detailed information out there, so this is just a quick overview. I have used most of these camera types in one form or another over the years. For instance the header image above is of my studio based Sinar 5x4 “ view camera, which I no longer use.

THE VIEW CAMERA

The twin lens reflex system eventually evolved into the single lens reflex cameras like the Hasselblad 6x6cm, where you viewed through the lens itself. Because of the film size the quality was superb.

THE SINGLE LENS REFLEX CAMERA (SLR)

The DSLR is almost identical in looks to the consumer SLR cameras that were used from the late 1950’s through to the 2000’s. In fact SLR cameras for film are still being made, albeit with digital touch screens and systems.

Computational photography

This is the next chapter in the evolvement of photography capture. It is still digital image capture, but it uses computerised processing techniques rather than optical processes, and can offer features that were simply not possible before at all. Benefits include non-optical HDR, depth of field, bokeh and many others.

Some of the cameras I have used over the years!
