The requirement is to create a sympathetic design for a new wine label as a promotion for a long-distance walking track
'The Bibbulnum Track' in Australia. This is a 13 layer composition that is designed as an (pixel) image from the outset.

Rather than using a DTP program, we will create this entirely in Photoshop. This tutorial gets you familiar with
the text tool, layer styles, drop shadows and percentage tinting. See below for the image files & text for this tutorial.

Final label

This is a good example of how to create a piece of printed
promo material with layers. It is a muted style of design
with
tinted elements that echo something of the nature and colours
of the Track itself.

Background tint 'base.jpg'
Snake motif 'snake.jpg'
Picture 'panorama.jpg'

Text (copy and paste)

1. Birdwood Park Winery
2. Vintage 2003
3. The Bibbulmun Track is Australia's award winning 940km
walking track, that follows the course carved out by the ancient
Aboriginal peoples of the same name.

4. A strong rich fruit of finest Birdwood Port, tempered with the
velvet softness of Merlot make the Bibbulmun Port a truly
unforgettable experience.

5. 750ml. 26.4 fl Oz

The Method
(Mac = Command. PC = Control. 'Co' for both.

1. If the layers panel is not visible, go; ‘WINDOW - Show Layers
2. Right click to open the 'base.jpg' image, we will use this as the background.
Just check that it is 7 x 11cms, RGB @ 250dpi. In case you are
wondering, the edge effect was created with the Auto F/X plug-in
'Photographic Edges'. Check out their excellent products on their
Auto FX website.

2

3. Turn on your rulers 'Co - R' and guides 'Co - :' Check that your rulers are in Centimeters, if not, double click a ruler to bring up the
preferences. Change to Centimeters. Drag a guide from the left hand side
ruler with the Move (V) tool and centre it on the 3.5cm mark. This will be
your centreline for all your elements

3

4. Open the 'snake.jpg' and with your Move Tool (V) drag this onto
your background.
5. Adjust the snake size to appoximate below. Change the opacity
of this layer to 6%. You should now see this (below right).

4 & 5

6. Open the 'panorama.jpg' image and place as per the main image (top).
7. Reduce the opacity of this to 60% (below).

6

7

8. Select your type tool (T) and type Port, at 85pts in a hand script,
something like Edwardian Script, Mistral or similar.
9. Select the type and hit your Foreground colour. This brings up
the Colour Picker, then choose 'Custom' .

9

10. This brings you to Custom Colours. Click 'Pantone process coated'
from the drop down menu. Type in D5 85 -1C. This brings up a
colour swatch instantly. Click okay. This now appears in your Tool Bar.

10

We are now going to run a Bevel & Emboss effect on the type layer.
11. Still on the type layer, go 'Layers - Layer Effects - Bevel & Emboss'
12. Set these attributes; Style - Inner Bevel. Depth - 630. Size - 10.
Smooth. Direction Up.

12

You should now have an effect similar to this? I didn't bother doing a
Drop Shadow on this, as I will use it on the 'Bibbulmun title instead.
Sometimes effects can be too much.

13. Select the type (T) tool, choose white for the type colour,
and type: Bibbulmun in Arial at 30pt.'
14. Select 'Layers - Free Transform' (Co - T) we need
to squash and compress the text a bit. Select: 'Free Transform',
and set these attributes for the text:
Height - 46.3%. Width - 92.7%. This sets the text to the same width
as 'Port'.

We will now add some effects to this type:
15. Go to: 'Layers - Layer Effects - Bevel & Emboss'
Use these settings: Inner Bevel. Depth - 630. Size - 5

15

16. Click & double click the Drop Shadow box to bring up the menu and check these settings: Opacity - 38%. Distance - 25. Spread - 5%. Size - 29. Angle - 135.

16

Your text should now look like this?....and

... your overall layout ... like this?

The other text bits are pretty straight forward, so we won't
go into these, apart from the vertical text on the right hand side
Ready?

17. Copy and paste the text (top - 3) into a new layer. Select with your
text tool (T) and go: 'Edit - Transform - Rotate 90 degrees CCW'

17

This flips the text vertical, facing the outside of the label.

18. Before you finish the layout, check that everything is
centred on the page using your centre line guide.

19. Copy and paste the remaining text lines
(page top: 1, 2 4 & 5) and place in the layout as per the sample below. ALL TEXT apart from the 'Vintage 2001' which is black, is PANTONE GREY DS 106C.

That's it! done.
