What we need to achieve - hand colouring

1.
If you are starting on this page and have not
come from the 'pole removal' section, download
the above image; Hill End start .

W
ith your image open in Photoshop, go to 'Image'
'Mode' 'RGB color'

2. Now go back to 'Image', but this time hit
'Adjustments' 'Colour balance'. We are going to
give an overall sepia tint to the image.

With these values: R= +30, G= 0, B= -30
This gives the background tint for the car,
the buildings and some of the ground.

3. Now we will select the sky with the 'Magic Wand'
(W).
Set the Tolerance to say 15 pixels.Keeping
your finger on the Shift key, hit the sky until you
have selected all the sky (nothing else).

4. Copy and paste this as a selection.
Co - C, Co - V.

We now have the sky as a 2nd layer but we want
to turn it into mono. The reason being, it is far
easier to ad blue to gray than it is to sepia.

5. So,
Go 'Image' 'Adjustments' 'Desaturate'
(or Co - Shift - U).

6. Now we can ad colour to the sky. Go 'Image'
'Adjustments' 'Colour Balance'

Try a midtone balance of say C-44 M0 Y+44. It's
not important, just get a blue that you like.

The beauty of having the sky as a layer,
is that you can either ad colour, or ad a
gradient to replace the sky completely.
It just gives you more creative freedom.

This is the approach to use throughout
this particular tutorial. Anything that
needs colouring, simply lift it off, colour
it and move to the next one.

7. We will now start to remove some of
the sepia by degrees. Make a duplicate
layer of the sepia one by 'Co-J'Go to your Tool Bar
and select the Sponge Tool (O), 7th down
on the right. Hold down the tool until you
see it. From the control strip at top, choose
desaturate. Choose a brush size of say 40.
Now simply start rubbing out the areas of
road/ashphalt etc, the car tyres, car roof etc.
Any areas that you think should be neutral.

You can make a duplicate layer of the sepia
one, destaurate this, place it above the sepia
one and start rubbing out with the Eraser (E)
Tool to reveal the sepia beneath it.

8. The basic idea is to create as many layers
as you need to separate out the elements, in
order to colour them. Here I have turned the
background layer off so you can see the blue,
grey, green and red layers.
