On location

He usually travels alone and stays up to a month on
location. For instance, cities like Berlin, Rome or
New Orleans required say a 10 to 14 day stint,
whilst the Discovery guides are anything from a
month to two months on location.

Even with a shoot list in hand, he often just wanders
for hours to get the feel of the location without
making any images. He then goes back again later
and sets about recording it.

He likes heading off and having little or no idea where
he is going, getting lost and seeing where fate
or the powers that be will take him. He loves the
visual bonuses that happen when he travels like this.

Hardware

His photographic equipment is pretty spartan.

He carries a Nikon D100 digital camera, with two
lenses, an 80 - 300mm 2.8 Nikon zoom and a 20mm 3.5 lens, an SB25 flash on an external cable and
that is a bout it.

On location he uses an Apple Mac iBook G4
laptop (1.6Mhz), plus a USB card reader.

He does not use a camera bag outside of the hotel, only for transit from the airport etc. Instead he uses a beaten up old backpack that he bought in East 42nd street during his NYC commission. It is one of those items that just feels right and he can't seem to part with it.

Journey to Yaxchilan

Mexicos Yaxchilan ruins
This was published
a number of times in various magazines
and papers. This is my account of a typical travel
adventure journey where things are sometimes
not as they would seem to be. We took a canoe
ride down th emighty Usumacinta river from
near Palenque to the lost city of Yaxchilan on
the border of Guatemala.

To my mind it sums up the adventure of being a
travel
photographer.
